A Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY) is an important stepping stone for aspiring speech-language pathologists (SLPs), designed to help them move from academic learning to professional, independent practice.

CFY positions provide hands-on experience under the supervision of seasoned experts, allowing novice SLPs to hone their clinical skills. During this time, CFY SLPs work with a wide range of clients, from children to adults, including those with autism and communication impairments.

While the specifics of CFY jobs can differ by geography and employer, several common aspects include:

  • CFY roles offer organized support to SLPs as they pursue full licensure and certification.
  • New SLPs are mentored, learning vital insights from established professionals in the area.
  • CFs gain practical experience testing, diagnosing, and treating speech and language problems while working with families and healthcare teams.
  • Opportunities are available in a variety of contexts, including schools, healthcare facilities, private practices, and research institutions.
  • CFY positions serve to establish links within the speech pathology community, promoting professional development and networking opportunities.
